arking garage, the show set the tone for the week, unfiltered, experimental, and proudly offbeat.

The collection, titled Angels & Deviants, explored contrast in every sense: light and dark, innocence and defiance, beauty and absurdity. Models walked a runway covered in artificial grass, surrounded by oversized, sculptural props that turned the industrial space into something between a suburban fantasy and an art installation. The audience mirrored the scene, dressed boldly and playfully, embracing the spirit of the night.

The show opened with a surprising moment of calm. A ballerina, dressed in soft tones, performed a slow, graceful walk to classic music from the 1950s. The quiet elegance drew the room in, until a sudden switch to rock music shattered the stillness. Startled, she fled the runway, making space for a rush of models dressed in the designer’s signature eccentric looks: bright colors, exaggerated silhouettes, and sculptural details, including several takes on angel wings.

Suburban Deviants’ approach to fashion has always been about challenging the expected. Welsh’s designs sit comfortably between art and commentary, blending nostalgia with satire and a deep sense of fun. While many brands chase restraint, this collection celebrated excess, not as shock value, but as self-expression.

The crowd’s reaction reflected the energy of the clothes. Cheers, laughter, and spontaneous applause rippled through the garage as each look appeared. The overall atmosphere was that of a creative community celebrating itself, an opening night that reminded everyone why Toronto’s underground fashion scene deserves more attention.

Fashion Art Toronto is known for giving space to boundary-pushing designers, and Suburban Deviants proved why that matters. The show was equal parts performance, runway, and statement, playful, fearless, and refreshingly unserious in the best way possible.

For an opening night, it couldn’t have been a better start.
